2026 BMW i3 & iX3: A Closer Look Than Ever Before

The upcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicles from BMW are being tested under harsh weather conditions—both hot and cold. New photos showcasing this extreme-weather testing also reveal more information about what’s ahead for the brand.

Out of all of the so-called "traditional" automakers, BMW has done better than most at transitioning to future technologies. The German automaker's current lineup of electric vehicles like the BMW i4 , i5 and iX are exceptional (although the most recent one might not be as impressive visually) and they've also had great success with plug-in hybrids recently. However, BMW insists that this is just the beginning.

Real influence comes from the subtle maneuvers. Neue Klasse EVs Inspired by BMW’s “New Class” vehicles from the 1960s and '70s, this upcoming series of all-new electric models aims to surpass current offerings in terms of range, software, performance, and efficiency. Despite how advanced today's electric vehicles are, they are essentially built on gasoline-powered car platforms and thus have inherent limitations regarding their capabilities.

This week, BMW provided us with our clearest glimpse yet of their latest offerings under the New Class platform: a sedan known as the BMW i3 (designated NA0 internally by BMW), along with an SUV named the iX3 (internally referred to as NA5).

It’s worth mentioning that among these models, only the iX3 has been formally given this designation so far; however, we’re quite certain that the sedan will adhere to the same naming scheme. We also have confirmation regarding when we’ll get our first look at it in person. According to BMW executives during their recent annual investor meeting, “This September, at the IAA Mobility show in Munich, the fully electric BMW iX3 will make its global debut as the inaugural model of the Neue Klasse.” They further stated, “The new BMW iX3 will establish benchmarks for driving pleasure, electrification, and digitization.” Manufacturing is scheduled to commence later this year in Hungary.

The iX3 and future models based on this platform will be true software-defined vehicles , supports over-the-air updates, integrates with smartphones, and continually improves over time. It features zonal architecture With approximately 2,000 feet (600 meters) fewer wires compared to present electric vehicles, this model aims for reduced weight and enhanced efficiency. Additionally, the iX3 will introduce cars featuring four super-brains " and the " Heart of Joy" Drivetrain control system. These might sound like silly names, yet they incorporate advanced technology.

We do not have information regarding the battery capacity, charging durations, or additional crucial specifications. However, BMW has confirmed that all Neue Klasse electric vehicles will provide a minimum range of 600 kilometers (373 miles) according to the European WLTP standards. When introduced in the U.S., we anticipate the iX3 to offer at least 300 miles of range, possibly even more. Additionally, these models operate on an 800-volt electrical system, which suggests they will feature rapid charging capabilities. 30% shorter charging times than current BMWs do.

BMW's CEO Oliver Zypse stated during today’s event that testing for the BMW iX3 is currently underway. This involves evaluating the vehicle under extremely hot and cold climatic conditions. In conjunction with this announcement, BMW also shared multiple images depicting the SUV and sedan models traversing deserts and snowy landscapes.

When these models eventually hit the market, they're expected to make quite an impression. The iX3 seems poised to drive most of the sales between the two; however, I am relieved that BMW hasn’t compromised their iconic 3 Series sports sedan as they transition into electrification. Regardless, each offers exciting prospects we can anticipate this year.
