Nigeria Revives World Cup Dreams with Historic Victory Over Rwanda

The Super Eagles achieved their initial win in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying round by securing a memorable 2-0 victory against Rwanda in Kigali, which has renewed their aspirations for making it to the international soccer event.

This win marked the inaugural triumph for the Super Eagles over the Wasps from Rwanda in Kigali during their prior three endeavors, with all former matches concluding in ties.

Victor Osimhen's two goals in the first half were enough for Nigeria to secure victory in their opening game under new coach Eric Chelle.

The forward on loan from Napoli to Galatasaray extended his impressive run of form by netting twice for his current club. In the 11th minute, he opened the score with a calm strike using the side of his foot after receiving an indirect pass from Ademola Lookman’s set-piece. Later, right before halftime, he added another goal through exceptional individual play; regaining control midfield, he lofted the ball over the keeper with precision.

Prior to this victory, Nigeria’s chances of qualifying were very slim, as they had managed to secure only three points out of their first four games.

This triumph propels the team, who are three-time African champions, to fourth place in Group C, trailing South Africa, Benin, and Rwanda. The increased tension within the group rankings was exacerbated by South Africa’s 2-0 defeat of Lesotho earlier that day.

Subsequently, Nigeria will welcome last-ranked Zimbabwe on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo as they strive to secure a place in the enlarged 48-team World Cup.

The team leaders of each group will secure direct entry into the competition held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

In the meantime, the Chairman of the FCT Football Association, Alhaji Adam Mouktar Mohammed, has extended his congratulations to the Super Eagles for their important win during an away game.

He stated that the players ought to enjoy the victory but quickly focus on their upcoming game with Zimbabwe.

I extend my congratulations to the Super Eagles for their hard-earned win against Rwanda. Despite the challenging nature of the contest, they successfully dominated the play.

'The most important thing is the three points. Whether they played well or not, it does not really matter at this time.

Therefore, I encourage the team to secure yet another win against Zimbabwe. Achieving this will effectively revitalize their campaign," stated Mouktar.

A previous coordinator of the Super Eagles, Emmanuel Danjuma Attah, also praised the players for securing full points.

There are no small fry left in global soccer, hence the Super Eagles merit praise. Despite it being their inaugural game under coach Eric Chelle, they put forth maximum effort to secure victory.

"I also think that the coach identified several weaknesses and plans to implement necessary technical improvements before the upcoming match against Zimbabwe," stated the CEO of the Nigerian National League (NNL).
