The Brooklyn-originated electric mobility company Revel is gearing up for significant expansion beyond its hometown by enhancing its electric vehicle (EV) charging network. This initiative gained momentum on Monday with the inauguration of their inaugural charging station in California.
Situated in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood, the newly opened station includes 12 electric vehicle chargers with a robust capacity of 320 kilowatts per charger. Six of these units are designed for this purpose. Plugs akin to those used by Tesla that the automotive sector is gradually embracing While one portion utilizes CHAdeMO technology, which is predominantly employed by Tesla vehicles, the remaining part adopts CCS infrastructure utilized by nearly all other electric vehicles currently on the market outside of Tesla’s lineup.
“At Revel, we aim to create an extensive network of urban rapid chargers that every electric vehicle driver can depend on,” stated Revel co-founder and COO Paul Suhey during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday. “This matters because without easy access to quick charging stations, the growth of electric vehicles will halt. It could even regress. The shift towards electrified ridesharing services would also come to a standstill.”
Revel stands out in the charging sector by concentrating on establishing stations in America’s most densely populated urban areas. In San Francisco, which boasts numerous electric vehicles and an abundance of high-speed chargers, Suhey noted that Revel aims to distinguish itself through reliable location choices. InsideEVs It's an commendable objective in a sector that consistently faces challenges. troubled by faulty or completely non-functional plugs .
He stated, 'It’s essential to feel assured that once you arrive, you’ll find a charging station available, easily start the charging process, benefit from rapid charging matching your electric vehicle’s capability, and swiftly complete your transaction.'
Part of this involves concentrating on larger stations equipped with numerous charging points. This approach aims to provide drivers with greater assurance that an available plug will likely be accessible whenever needed.
Mayor Daniel Lurie of San Francisco spoke at the ceremonial opening of Revel on Monday.
The main emphasis of our platforms is developing locations equipped with multiple chargers, such as those featuring eight, 12, 24, or even 30 chargers," explained Suhey. "Essentially, these will serve as dedicated electric fueling hubs for the future—unlike incidental charging spots found in parking lots, which often seem like an afterthought.
Revel operates 88 charging stations spread across five sites in New York City , which includes the recently added 24-stall station at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. Additionally, Revel operates an electric car-sharing service in New York City to ensure high usage rates for their charging stations. The company has decided not to introduce its signature blue Teslas and Kias to the San Francisco Bay Area due to the area’s substantial population of electric vehicle owners. This decision was made by Revel CEO Frank Reig. told InsideEVs in February .
At Monday’s event, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie stated that electric vehicles accounted for one-third of all vehicle sales in the city over the last two years.
Within the next 12 months, Revel plans to open seven more stations in the Bay Area for a total of 125 additional charging plugs. That includes two more in San Francisco, two in Oakland, two by San Francisco's airport and one in downtown San Jose. With more charging hubs planned in New York, including a massive 60-stall location in Queens, Revel aims to operate 300 chargers in the city by the end of 2025.
