Ikundabayo Acknowledges the Long Road Ahead
On Sunday, Roben Ikundabayo secured his first medal at the 2025 Race to Remember held in Kigali, but the promising 19-year-old remains optimistic about future achievements. Riding for Muhazi Cycling Generation, Ikundabayo completed the 113-kilometer course between Canal Olympia Rebero via Nemba and Bugesera in 2 hours, 44 minutes, and 46 seconds. This victory placed him ahead of runners-up Shemu Sengiyumva from Java Inovotec Pro Team and Vainqueur Masengesho from Benediction Club, who finished just three seconds behind. Despite demonstrating steady progress recently, Ikundabayo acknowledges that much lies ahead in his journey. "There’s still a lot left to accomplish," he stated. "Now it's crucial to put forth even greater effort to secure additional victories." Reflecting on his triumph, he expressed excitement over what lay ahead: "This win presents an exciting opportunity; I aim to enhance my skills further." Ikundabayo also highlighted how pivotal support was throughout—from coaching guidance down to peer encouragement—which collectively contributed significantly toward securing the title. Moving forward, he aims not only to maintain high standards within his sport but seeks continuous enhancement as well. The annual event honors fallen cyclists lost during Rwanda’s tragic genocide history in 1994. With this year marking another milestone success story following last year’s champion, Eric Manizabayo, Ikundabayo stands out once again among competitors.
