MAGA Republicans Back EV Investments in America: Poll Shows

President Trump aims to eliminate funding for electric vehicles. However, most of his supporters advocate for American electric vehicle jobs and investments to compete with China.

An impressive new survey indicates a significant change in how electric vehicles are viewed in the United States among people from different political backgrounds.

President Trump is pulling back funding For electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, he has begun efforts to phase out the $7,500 federal tax incentive that reduces the cost of EVs. However, his supporters, particularly four out of every five Republicans associated with the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, believe the U.S. should keep EVs budget-friendly and enhance the nation’s network of charging stations.

The bipartisan survey The survey was carried out by the polling companies Meeting Street Insights and Hart Research, and was jointly sponsored by the policy groups Conservative Energy Network, Centerline Liberties, and Zero Emission Transportation Association (ZETA). It involved interviewing 1,015 registered voters across the country, with a specific focus on 525 voters from 15 congressional districts—most of which have Republican representatives—that had previously received federal funds for establishing electric vehicle facilities during the previous Biden administration.

A whopping 80% of respondents who identified as Republicans, including four in five MAGA Republicans, said the U.S. should continue supporting American companies and American workers who build affordable EVs. Instead of these jobs going to China, they want them here in the U.S. About 62%, or three in five respondents, said it's important that the U.S. beats China in EV manufacturing.

The Biden administration’s electric vehicle policies have garnered widespread approval, even from Republican voters. Up to 72% of all participants back the $7,500 federal tax incentive aimed at making electric vehicles more affordable. This credit has lowered the upfront cost for various electric models, such as all Teslas And numerous well-liked vehicles like the Chevy Equinox EV , Honda Prologue and Kia EV9 .

Here are several important insights from the survey:

• 80%—or four in five—MAGA Republicans support keeping EV jobs in the U.S. instead of conceding to China.
• Eighty-five percent of respondents across the nation, including eighty-one percent from areas designated for Republican Party investments in electric vehicles (EVs), believe that the U.S. should keep producing cost-effective electric cars.
• 72% of Republicans believe that the federal government should keep expanding the number of electric vehicle charging stations.
• Seventy-one percent of respondents from congressional districts that obtained federal support for electric vehicle facilities think the United States will lag behind Japan, South Korea, and China if investment ceases.
• 46% of voters—and 58% of Republicans within this group—are not intending to purchase electric vehicles in the near future but still back investment inEVs.

In addition, 77% of voters, with 63% being Republicans, favor rebate programs aimed at making electric vehicle charger installations at residences or workplaces more cost-effective.

Support for electric vehicles is also robust in congressional districts that have obtained federal financing for EV infrastructure. Most of these districts are located within states that supported Trump in the previous presidential election.
