Peter Obi Demands Justice for 15-Year-Old Supporter Wrongly Imprisoned in Kirikiri

The former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has demanded justice for Yusuf Alabi, a 15-year-old boy who has been detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for more than three months without being put on trial.

In 2023, Alabi garnered nationwide recognition after being captured in an image standing fearlessly before Obi’s procession at a political gathering in Lagos. This photograph became immensely popular and came to represent youthful optimism.

In a posting made through his verified X account late Tuesday evening, Obi voiced strong concerns about the extended detainment of the young individual and called upon officials to adhere to legal standards.

I came across the situation involving a young boy named Quadri Yusuf Alabi, who has been imprisoned for more than three months without being put on trial. He had his initial court appearance in March and continues to be kept in detention.

"I've reached out to Lawyer Barrister Inibehe Effiong, fortunately, someone who has been diligently striving for his liberation. With genuine earnestness, I implore the police and governmental authorities to consistently adhere to legal standards and regulations, ceasing the practice of turning against civilians—especially our young people—who require support and affection so they can channel their skills and vigor into constructing a promising new Nigeria," he shared on social media.

Alabi was reportedly detained by young locals who then turned him over to the authorities, accusing him of being a well-known troublemaker and robber.

Nevertheless, Alabi insists he is innocent, claiming he identified the young people accusing him. It is reported that the accusers bore a grudge against Alabi’s family because they did not receive "compensation" money when he got financial gifts from Obi and social figure Cubana Chief Priest following his energetic performance at the rally.

Alabi faces charges of assault and theft. His initial court appearance was on March 27, and the subsequent hearing is set for April 28.

Effiong affirmed Obi’s involvement, noting that measures have been stepped up to secure justice and Alabi’s release.

"I can verify that you reached out to me earlier today regarding this matter. Your engagement with the case is appreciated, sir. Over the past 24 hours, efforts have been stepped up to guarantee justice is served and that Quadri Yusuf Alabi is released as quickly as possible. An update will be provided shortly. Time will prove the righteousness of our cause," he wrote on X.
