Women Journalists Urged to Lead the Charge for Democratic Reforms

The Sokoto State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has reiterated its dedication to promoting gender equality and advancing democratic reforms through journalism.

During a two-day capacity-building workshop for female journalists held in Sokoto, the NUJ reaffirmed its dedication to these principles.

Themed "Women Journalists' Impact on Democratic Reforms in Nigeria," this event was organized by the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative, working alongside the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists and HumInt Development Consult Ltd. The initiative received support from the MacArthur Foundation.

At the event, NUJ Chairman for Sokoto State Council, Usman Mohammed Binji, delivered a speech emphasizing the significant contribution of women in both journalism and democracy. He honored the trailblazing female journalists like Funke Durodola, Kadaria Ahmed, Bilkisu Yusuf, and Ngozi Nwozor-Agbo, referring to these pioneers as paragons of bravery and dedication to honesty.

"Female reporters have not just kept the public informed; they've also influenced policies, given louder platforms to marginalized groups, and made substantial contributions to national progress," stated Binji.

Their efforts are crucial for strengthening democratic principles and advancing civic education throughout the nation.

During her address, Hajiya Rabi Muhammad Gwadabawa, who leads NAWOJ Zone A as its Chairperson, characterized the workshop as a crucial and planned effort designed to enhance the skills and impact of female reporters in politics and media management.

Echoing the sentiments of NAWOJ’s National Chairperson, Comrade Aishatu K. Ibrahim, she encouraged attendees to make full use of this chance, highlighting that increased involvement of women in democratic activities is crucial for long-term progress, fairness, and effective leadership.

Participants at the workshop highlighted that women contribute distinctive viewpoints to leadership and governance roles. They emphasized that actively involving women in political journalism can improve transparency, boost accountability, and assist in reducing corruption.

The participants hailing from Sokoto, Kebi, Zamfara, and Katsina states were advised that constructing a robust democratic society necessitates incorporating various perspectives. They highlighted that strengthening female reporters is essential for ensuring comprehensive media coverage and promoting equitable democratic development.

According to Arewa PUNCH, this workshop represents an important milestone in promoting gender equality within Nigerian journalism. It seeks to empower female journalists with the essential skills needed to spearhead discussions about democratic reforms.
